The University of Akron's warning system was first implemented in 2004, following the blackout of 2003. Originally, 3 DSA's were installed, followed by a Modulator in May 2009, following the tragedy at Virginia Tech. University EM wanted to add a siren on the west side of campus after expanding into downtown, but the City of Akron denied the request, claiming they would disrupt local businesses downtown.
